Speakeasy 4
About This Machine
Bally's Speakeasy 4, a solid-state electronic add-a-ball pinball machine, is a four-player variant of Bally's 1982 'Speakeasy' (a 2-player game). According to Pinball Memories, this version was built at the request of a European distributor who didn't want 2-player games, with some units reportedly going to Australia. About 1,000 were made, with playfields in this run reportedly made of resin rather than wood.
Designed by George Christian with art by Greg Freres, the game's American-history, Prohibition-era theme centers on a roulette wheel and playing-card targets that must be hit in sequence. A distinctive "sacrifice" feature lets a player cancel any out-of-sequence card by pressing an extra button on the left side of the cabinet, at a cost of 25,000 points per canceled card — a rare risk/reward mechanic for the period. The game can award both replays and extra balls in the same play, and features two pop bumpers... two kick-out holes, a five-bank of flyaway targets, a standup target, a star rollover, and crossover return lanes.
The 'speakeasy' theme references the illegal Prohibition-era saloons of the 1920s and early 1930s, tying the game's card-and-roulette gameplay to its American History billing.
