Starship Troopers
About This Machine
Starship Troopers, released by Sega Pinball in December 1997, brought the sci-fi movie franchise's intergalactic combat to the playfield as a licensed six-player, solid-state machine. It features three flippers, giving players a bit more control as they battle through the game's bug-hunting theme.
The game includes multiball play with four modes ranging from two to four balls in play simultaneously. Among its standout features are four 8-segment LED counters built into the playfield, a pop-up "Brain Bug" target, and a moving "Warrior Bug" live-fire battle simulator target. The right outlane doubles as part of the ball shooter lane, and the backbox has a distinctive convex front. Fred Young provided voice characterizations for the game.
As one of several licensed movie themes Sega Pinball produced in the late 1990s, Starship Troopers reflects the company's approach of pairing Hollywood sci-fi properties with increasingly elaborate playfield toys during this era.
