Cannes
About This Machine
Cannes is an electro-mechanical pinball machine from Segasa, one of Spain's pinball manufacturers of the 1970s. Produced in June 1976 as model 998, this four-player game takes its name and theme from the famous French resort town, celebrating water skiing, swimming, and seaside recreation.
Gameplay-wise, Cannes offers a well-rounded EM layout: two flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, three kick-out holes, two standup targets, plus a spinning target and a swinging target. The game could be set for three- or five-ball play, features an end-of-ball bonus, and displays scores up to 999,990 points per player, all accompanied by the sound of three chimes. The machine uses standard Williams replacement parts, and its playfield layout has similarities to Williams' 1976 'Space Mission.'
Cannes has some charming quirks for collectors. The top center rollover is famously marked 'Extra Ball Whet Lit' instead of 'When Lit' — a misspelling that may or may not appear on every playfield in the run. Segasa also remade the game the following year as its 1977 'Monaco,' with higher point values and some rule changes, keeping the Riviera theme alive across two titles.
