Gusher
About This Machine
Gusher is a single-player, flipperless electro-mechanical pinball machine manufactured in September 1935 by the Shyvers Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Illinois. It was part of Shyvers' 'Spirit of America' series of games.
As a flipperless machine, Gusher predates the invention of the flipper (which would not appear in pinball until Gottlieb's Humpty Dumpty in 1947). Players would have relied on the machine's launch mechanism, gravity, and skillful nudging to direct the ball toward scoring targets, rather than any flipper-based control.
Specific rules and artwork details for Gusher have not survived. Shyvers Manufacturing operated only from 1935 to 1937, making Gusher a representative piece of that short-lived Chicago manufacturer's output during the mid-1930s.
