About This Machine

Kings of the Turf (Payout Model) is a single-player electro-mechanical payout pinball machine manufactured in September 1935 by H. C. Evans & Company of Chicago, Illinois (trade name 'Evans'). Built around a horse-racing theme, it offered five balls of play for a nickel.

As a payout model, Kings of the Turf advertised for $79.50 when new, with a check separator available for an additional $5.00 and a transformer for $7.50 extra. The model, numbered E33 (also referred to as 33 or E-33), was marketed as the 'Improved' model. Its horse-racing theme reflects the popularity of sports-based amusement games in the mid-1930s.

While specific rules and playfield layout details have not survived, the machine reflects the standard electro-mechanical payout design of its era, using relays and switches rather than the flippers that would not be introduced until 1947.

H. C. Evans & Company was an active Chicago manufacturer of coin-operated games from 1935 to 1948, and Kings of the Turf is one of its earliest known products.
