About This Machine

The X-Files pinball machine, designed by Rob Hurtado and released by Sega Pinball on September 9, 1997, is a licensed title based on the popular TV series, blending science fiction, mystery, and conspiracy themes. This solid-state electronic machine, built on the Sega/Stern Whitestar platform, features playfield and backglass art by Morgan Weistling and Marc Raneses, with music and sound by Brian Schmidt.

The game's centerpiece toy is a file cabinet that rises from the playfield to capture balls and start multiball, aided by a stop magnet positioned in front of it and a trap door that pops up to capture the ball. Other notable features include two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, six standup targets, a vertical up-kicker, a mini-post at the top of the playfield, a mini-loop horseshoe lane, an autoplunger, and an alien baby tube toy on the right ramp.

A particularly collectible variant is the 'Collector's Edition,' of which only twelve were produced, co-branded with Neiman Marcus and sold through their Christmas catalog for $6,500 each, complete with a certificate of authenticity signed by the design team and software marking its serial number (e.g., '1 of 12'). Neiman Marcus had previously offered a similar limited 'Collector's Edition' of Sega's Star Wars Trilogy pinball.
