Fireball
About This Machine
The Fireball pinball machine, manufactured by Bally in October 1976, is a non-commercial, home-model version of Bally's 1972 EM 'Fireball', sharing only its art theme with that earlier game. It used solid-state electronics with a single multi-player digital display in place of score reels, and was produced in approximately 10,000 units, sold through retailers such as Sears.
Notable features include its pair of flippers, which remain active even in Game Over mode, along with two pop bumpers, two slingshots, three standup targets, and two spinning targets. Its playfield layout is shared with several other Bally home models of the era, including 'Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy', 'Galaxy Ranger', and 'Evel Knievel', each dressed in different artwork.
The Fireball's Fantasy theme is reflected in its backglass art. According to a 1977 Cash Box year-end review, a 'Fireball' home pin was purchased by Chip Carter for the family home of President Jimmy Carter in Plains, Georgia (though that particular unit was reportedly the commercial version). As an early home application of solid-state technology for Bally, this Fireball variant is a notable piece of mid-1970s pinball history.
