Continental
About This Machine
The Continental, designed by Don Hooker and manufactured by Bally in December 1980, holds a notable place in bingo machine history: it is generally regarded as Bally's last full-production bingo game, produced in a confirmed run of 1,000 units as a 25-hole, solid-state single-player machine.
As a bingo machine, Continental does not feature flippers or traditional pinball targets; instead, players win replays by completing patterns on its 25-hole card, using Bally's electronic circuitry rather than the electro-mechanical relays of earlier bingo games. It should not be confused with Bally's earlier 1978 electro-mechanical 'Continental,' which used a different backglass design and only 18 holes.
Believed for years to have been shipped entirely to Belgium, at least a few units were also reportedly seen at a U.S. distributorship in South Carolina in 1989. A planned successor, 1981's 'Mississippi Showboat,' was built only as electro-mechanical test units and never reached full production, cementing this Continental's status as the end of the line for Bally's bingo machine business.
