Junk Yard
About This Machine
Junk Yard, designed by Barry Oursler and Dwight Sullivan for Williams Electronics, is a 1996 solid-state pinball machine with a Fantasy theme built around a junkyard setting. With 3,013 units confirmed produced, it was a solidly successful release for Williams' WPC-95 platform, known for its inventive toys: a crane on the playfield, a toilet that flushes the ball, a 'Magic Bus,' and a doghouse with an attack dog.
Gameplay features two flippers, two slingshots, nine standup targets, and two 3-bank drop targets. Its signature mechanical feature is a wrecking ball hanging from a chain that swings across the playfield - originally designed by Oursler with a steel cable, which was changed to a chain during development after the cable proved to fray and break. Voice-over artist Tim Kitzrow provided multiple voices for the game's callouts.
Visually, Junk Yard leans fully into its scrapyard theme, with artwork by Paul Barker, Pat McMahon, and Linda Deal bringing the junkyard setting and its hanging-chain feature to life. Junk Yard remains a well-regarded and reasonably plentiful machine among WPC-95-era Williams titles.
