Cosmic Princess
About This Machine
Cosmic Princess, manufactured by Leisure & Allied Industries (LAI) of Perth, Australia in August 1979, is a four-player solid-state pinball machine with an astrology theme. It was built under license from Stern Electronics — one of several titles Stern licensed to LAI for the Australian market, and notably the only one of those titles that Stern did not also manufacture itself. Cosmic Princess used the same game ROMs as Stern's own 1979 release, 'Magic.' Stern shipped 336 knock-down kits (everything except the cabinet and playfield glass) for LAI to complete locally at its Perth factory.
Gameplay includes two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, seven star rollovers, two stand-up targets, two spinning targets, a 5-bank of drop targets, a kick-out hole, and dual inlanes on both sides. A distinctive optional feature was the 'Photomat' unit, which could be mounted on the backbox and, according to The Complete Pinball Book, took an instant photo of players whenever they beat the machine's high score; it's unknown whether any of these units survive today.
No designer is documented for Cosmic Princess, but its origin as a Stern-licensed, Australian-assembled variant of 'Magic' makes it a distinctive case study in how American pinball designs reached international markets in the late 1970s.
