About This Machine

Macao, produced by Elettrocoin of Firenze, Italy in 1968, is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine built around a gambling and dice theme, with a 5-digit score display. Its playfield layout is very similar to Gottlieb's 1968 'Royal Guard.'

Gameplay features two flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, and seven stand-up targets. The backglass depicts a man in Chinese attire playing street dice with a woman, while the cabinet art shows two warriors fighting in front of pagodas — artwork evoking Macao's reputation, dating back to Portuguese colonial rule and the legalization of gambling there in 1847, as a historic gambling destination sometimes nicknamed 'The Monte Carlo of the Orient.'

No designer is documented for Macao. Despite the game's title, IPDB researchers have found no evidence that 'Macao' refers to an actual dice game; the name more likely draws on the real-world city's long association with gambling and games of chance, a theme also touched on in the 1952 Hollywood film of the same name.
