About This Machine

Airborne, designed by Claude Fernandez and manufactured by Capcom Coin-Op in March 1996, is an aviation-themed solid-state pinball machine and one of the later titles from Capcom's brief run in the pinball business. It showcases Capcom's dedication to inventive mechanical design during its short-lived entry into the industry.

Airborne's gameplay features two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two slingshots feeding an array of ramps and habitrails. The machine's "Injector" mechanism at the top of the ramp system helps direct the ball's path down the ramps, and an airport tower toy can be buzzed with the ball. The design also includes a left outlane kickback and a right outlane ball-return gate, adding to its difficulty and replay value.

With 1,350 units confirmed produced, Airborne also offered operators a maximum 99-ball buy-in option per player, letting players purchase additional balls if they exhausted their initial allocation -- a feature aimed at high-score enthusiasts. Designer Claude Fernandez left Capcom after this game's production, shortly before the company exited the pinball business.
