Congo
About This Machine
Congo, designed by John Trudeau, was released by Williams Electronics Games in November 1995 as a 4-player solid-state machine (WPC-95) with a jungle theme, running on 2,129 confirmed production units. Artist Kevin O'Connor and sound/music designer Vince Pontarelli helped bring the game's atmosphere to life, with software by Bill Grupp and Dean Grover.
Congo's signature feature is a gorilla figure on a lower-level mini-playfield, visible through a window in the main playfield, sculpted by special-effects artist Stan Winston, known for his film and television work. The gorilla can be controlled with the flipper buttons to bat the ball toward targets, and a volcano-themed ramp on the upper playfield adds to the jungle setting.
Congo was released both as a complete game and as a conversion kit for narrow-body WPC Security cabinets. Notably, at least one prototype unit is known to survive, built on a No Fear cabinet with an unusual set of playfield and hardware differences from the production run, including different insert colors and wording, silver rather than black saucer scoops, and an early-style light board.
