About This Machine

Bright Lights is an early Bally bingo machine designed by Don Hooker, and a historically significant one: after Bally's apparent first bingo machine, 1937's 'Line-Up', Bright Lights was among the first of the company's famed 1950s bingo line, appearing in 1951. As a bingo machine rather than a conventional pinball game, it has no flippers; instead, players shoot balls into a field of 25 trap holes corresponding to numbers on bingo cards in the backglass.

The game features six bingo cards on its backglass, giving players multiple chances to line up winning combinations as balls settle into the numbered holes. Bally referred to their knockers as "sounders", and the operating manual for this game lists a "Sounder Assembly" among its backbox parts. According to Phil Hooper's Bingo website, four schematic diagrams exist for Bright Lights, each covering a different range of serial numbers, evidence of running revisions during production.

With its dancing-women theme, Bright Lights (Bally model number 533) captures the flavor of the early bingo era. Its playfield and cabinet design were influential enough that Bally reused them directly to create the single-card 'Broadway' (Model 535) shortly afterward, making Bright Lights a foundational game in the history of Bally's bingo machines.
