Blackstone
About This Machine
The Blackstone, manufactured by Chicago Coin Machine Manufacturing Company in July 1933, is one of the earliest and rarest examples of a pure mechanical pinball machine, and notably Chicago Coin's very first game. It was actually built for Chicago Coin under contract by Stoner Mfg, since Chicago Coin (then the Chicago Coin Machine Exchange) had no manufacturing space of its own until it moved to a new location in January 1934.
Gameplay on the Blackstone is characterized by simple, pre-flipper mechanics, with players relying on gravity and the layout of pins and lanes to control the ball's trajectory -- flippers would not be invented for another decade and a half.
The Blackstone's design is notable for its simplicity, reflecting the limited production values of its time. As a rare surviving example from this era, and as the game that launched Chicago Coin's long manufacturing history (1932-1977), the Blackstone offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of pinball, making it a highly coveted find among enthusiasts.
