Red White & Blue
About This Machine
Red White & Blue is a 1941 electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine manufactured by Success Manufacturing Corporation of Chicago, Illinois, a company active from 1940 to 1942. It is a flipperless, single-player machine, consistent with the mechanics common before the flipper's introduction later in the decade.
The game's standout feature is its replay system: players earn a replay for hitting the red, white, and blue bumpers in sequence from one through five, and hitting all playfield bumpers awards twenty replays. The maximum score of 79,000 points earns replays starting at 60,000 and every 1,000 points thereafter - a player who both hits all the bumpers and scores 60,000 points or more can earn 75 replays or more. The number of replays won was projected onto a star on the backglass, and a knockoff switch beneath the cabinet let location owners clear those replays to pay players in cash or trade instead.
While little else is documented about Red White & Blue's design or artwork, its elaborate replay-scoring system reflects the ingenuity operators and manufacturers used to make bumper-and-target gameplay engaging in the years just before the flipper transformed pinball.
