Quinella
About This Machine
Quinella, produced by Western Equipment & Supply Company of Chicago in 1938, is a one-ball, payout-style electro-mechanical machine with a horse-racing theme, released near the end of the company's brief run (1934-1938).
As a one-ball payout machine, gameplay would have centered on a single launched ball settling into scoring pockets to determine a payout, following the conventions typical of horse-racing-themed machines from the mid-to-late 1930s -- predating the introduction of flippers, which did not appear in pinball until 1947. Records show the game was produced in two cabinet variants, one featuring the Western Selective 7-Coin Head on the cabinet front.
Specific details about Quinella's artwork and designer have not survived, but as a product of a short-lived manufacturer, it remains a scarce piece of pre-war payout-pinball history for collectors.
