Saturn 2
About This Machine
Saturn 2, released by Bell Games of Bologna, Italy in August 1985, is a solid-state pinball machine notable for being a conversion kit built on Bally Midway's 1984 arcade/pinball hit 'Spy Hunter.' Its software is reportedly derived directly from Spy Hunter -- the first 4kB of its ROM is identical to the Spy Hunter U2 ROM, with the remaining 4kB modified for Nuova Bell Games -- and it runs on a Bally MPU AS-2518-35. Approximately 1,200 units were produced.
As part of the conversion kit, the cabinet is covered with metal overlays, giving Saturn 2 a distinct look from the original Spy Hunter. Gameplay includes four flippers, a pop bumper, a 4-bank drop target, a kick-out hole, a captive ball, a spinning target, and a mini-bagatelle feature in the upper-left playfield, adding an extra layer of shot-making challenge.
The game's Space theme is reflected in backglass art depicting a spaceship that closely resembles the Gunstar Starfighter from the 1984 film 'The Last Starfighter.' As a conversion built on borrowed Bally hardware and software, Saturn 2 illustrates a common cost-saving practice among smaller European manufacturers in the mid-1980s solid-state era.
