Mad Race
About This Machine
Mad Race is a four-player solid-state pinball machine released by Playmatic of Barcelona, Spain in 1985. Playmatic was one of Europe's most prolific pinball manufacturers, operating from 1968 to 1987, and Mad Race arrived during the twilight of the company's run.
The playfield features four flippers, two pop bumpers, three kick-out holes, two standup targets, a 4-bank drop target, a 3-bank drop target, a star rollover, and 3-ball multiball -- but no slingshots, an unusual omission that gives the layout a distinctive flow. Its multiball music was reused from another 1985 Playmatic title, 'Trailer.'
Little further documentation exists about Mad Race's specific theme, designer, or production numbers, but its multiball capability and dense bank of drop targets reflect Playmatic's more ambitious mid-1980s designs.
