Marines At Play (2nd Edition)
About This Machine
Marines At Play (2nd Edition) is a historic electro-mechanical, Flipperless pinball machine manufactured by Westerhaus Manufacturing Company of Cheviot, Ohio in July 1945. It was a conversion of Bally's 1941 'Flicker' and the advertised second production run of Westerhaus Amusement Co.'s 1944 'Marines At Play (1st Edition)'. Its wartime Marines theme reflects the cultural landscape of its era.
Westerhaus advertised this second run with "many added features," including two new 5000-point bumpers, a 5000 roll-over, and 2-5 free-play bumpers, though IPDB notes uncertainty about whether the pictured game actually differed from the first edition or was simply a continuation of an earlier design change.
This was also the last game produced by Westerhaus Manufacturing Company, which had only recently split off from Westerhaus Amusement Company; within months, the Manufacturing Company's equipment and building were taken over by Esquire Manufacturing Company. As one of the final EM machines with a military theme from this short-lived manufacturer, Marines At Play (2nd Edition) remains an intriguing piece for pinball historians.
