Megaaton
About This Machine
The Megaaton, produced by Playmatic in April 1984, is a solid-state electronic (SS) pinball machine from the Barcelona, Spain manufacturer. By this point Playmatic had been building SS games for several years (since the late 1970s), so Megaaton represents a mature entry in their solid-state lineup rather than an early one. The machine uses a Playmatic MPU 3 board and a Playmatic SOUND 4 sound board.
One distinctive feature of the Megaaton is its backbox shape, which echoes the design first seen on Bally's 1982 'Rapid Fire' and used on several other Bally games of the era -- an interesting case of cross-manufacturer stylistic influence in early-1980s pinball.
As a product of Playmatic, a manufacturer that operated from 1968 to 1987 and was less prominent than major American players like Bally and Williams, the Megaaton is a lesser-known but notable example of European solid-state pinball design from the mid-1980s. Specific details about its theme and artwork are not well documented.
