Blue Skies
About This Machine
The Blue Skies pinball machine, produced by United Manufacturing Company in November 1948, arrived in the very early years of the flipper era — flippers had been introduced to the industry only a year earlier, in late 1947. Its two flippers gave players far more control over the ball's trajectory than the flipperless games that dominated just a few years before, and four strategically placed kick-out holes round out the playfield action, creating a challenging yet engaging gameplay experience that rewards skillful play.
The game carries a sailing and relaxation theme, conveying a sense of tranquility. Blue Skies also holds a small place in company history: it was the first United pin game advertised as being produced at the company's new manufacturing plant at 3401 N. California Avenue in Chicago, a facility of roughly 70,000 square feet that United began building in October 1947.
The designer's identity remains unknown, leaving room for speculation among enthusiasts who might be eager to uncover more about this early flipper-era game.
