Oscar
About This Machine
Oscar, manufactured by Genco in July 1938, is a flipperless electro-mechanical payout machine with a boating, fishing, and recreation theme — its name references the oscar, a freshwater fish native to South America. It is the payout counterpart to Genco's non-payout 'Splash,' released the same year.
Gameplay features 18 spring bumpers, giving the ball plenty of activity as it moves around the playfield, along with a free play hole that awards further play. A lamp matrix in the lower-left playfield is found only on this payout version, distinguishing it from 'Splash.'
Oscar's design and art likely draw on 1930s boating and fishing motifs, in keeping with its stated theme, though detailed documentation of its artwork is limited. As an EM machine from the late 1930s, it offers a window into the payout-game side of the pinball industry before games shifted decisively toward amusement-only play.
