About This Machine

Space City, released by Zaccaria of Bologna, Italy in September 1979, is a single-player solid-state pinball machine with an outer-space, science-fiction theme, part of a wave of space-themed games popular in the late 1970s. Its artwork was created by Lorenzo Rimondini.

Gameplay includes two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, four standup targets, two kick-out holes, and a 5-bank drop target. A notable playfield detail is its open-elbow inlanes, which allow the ball to pass between the inlane and outlane and back again, adding an unusual element of risk to shots along the outer lanes.

Space City is technically notable for its MPU: it uses a production Zaccaria board set built around the National Semiconductor 8060 processor, entirely unrelated to Zaccaria's more common first-generation MPU based on the Signetics 2650A. Only three Zaccaria games used this unique board — Space City, 1978's 'Strike,' and 1978's 'Ski Jump.' A four-player version of the same game was released as Zaccaria's 1978 title 'Future World.' Little else is documented about Space City's specific designer or its commercial performance.
