About This Machine

Spain 82, manufactured by Playmatic of Barcelona in October 1982, is a four-player solid-state pinball machine with a football (soccer) theme, timed to coincide with that year's FIFA World Cup held in Spain. It runs on Playmatic's MPU 3 hardware.

The machine features four flippers, two pop bumpers, five standup targets, five star rollovers, two 3-bank drop targets, and two kick-out holes, along with multiball play. A distinctive vertical up-kicker (VUK) launches the ball up an elevated tube that delivers it to the right side of the playfield. The game has no slingshots; instead, a rubbered post positioned between the flippers can be fired upward by the player using an extra flipper button on the right side — a mechanism similar to the kicking posts used on Bally's 1981 machines 'Fireball II' and 'Medusa.'

Little is documented about Spain 82's specific designer, but its football theme and multiball-capable layout made it a fitting release for Playmatic during the 1982 World Cup year, and it remains of interest to collectors of Spanish pinball.
