Silver Runway
About This Machine
Silver Runway, produced by the Brooklyn Amusement Machine Co. in May 1932, is a Pure Mechanical (PM) playfield from the very early days of American pinball. Rather than a standalone cabinet machine, Silver Runway was sold as a conversion playfield designed to be installed into other manufacturers' existing game cabinets — a common practice in the early 1930s amusement trade. A period Billboard advertisement for the game contains indirect references to two of those other manufacturers' games it was designed to fit.
As a Pure Mechanical machine, Silver Runway predates both the flipper (introduced in 1947) and widespread electromechanical scoring, relying instead on gravity, pins, and mechanical scoring elements to determine outcomes for its single player.
Little is documented about Silver Runway's specific theme or artwork, but its status as an early conversion kit offers a glimpse into how manufacturers extended the life of existing game cabinets during pinball's formative years.
