About This Machine

The Triangle is one of the more obscure entries in Atari's early solid-state pinball history — so obscure, in fact, that it never became a complete machine. According to former Atari employee Dan Kramer, writing in The Coin Slot (Fall 1986), Triangle was a narrow-bodied prototype designed by Gary Slater that did not proceed past the prototype stage; only parts of the game are known to have existed, not a finished cabinet.

Because it never reached completion, virtually nothing is documented about Triangle's intended gameplay, scoring, or theme. As a Solid State Electronic (SS) design for four players, it would have used Atari's electronic scoring technology, which the company was developing during its run as a pinball manufacturer, but no further specifics survive.

Triangle is chiefly of interest today as a footnote in Atari's brief pinball history, alongside its other narrow-body prototype, Neutron Star (1981). It remains a reminder that not every pinball project makes it to market.
