About This Machine

The Staal Society's 1979 creation, Gun Men, is a Western-themed solid-state electronic pinball machine produced in Saint-Ouen, France. Its artwork was created by Michele "Mike" Martinelli, along with a collaborator credited as "B. Kobra"; signatures on the backglass and playfield reading "Mike 79" helped correct the game's manufacture date, previously misattributed to 1977.

Gameplay features on Gun Men include two flippers, two pop bumpers, two 4-bank drop targets in the upper playfield, and five standup targets, along with a backglass finished with mirrored trim. Several documented examples show the playfield was modified over time — some units had their original drop-target banks replaced with star rollovers, a spinning target, and additional drop targets, along with electronic sound boards apparently replacing the chime unit found in earlier examples.

Little else is documented about Gun Men's designer or its place in Staal Society's small output. Its rarity, unusual production history, and the puzzle of its multiple playfield variations make it an intriguing specimen for collectors interested in the lesser-known corners of French pinball manufacturing.
