Fantasy
About This Machine
The Stoner Manufacturing Company's 1940 machine Fantasy is an early single-player electromechanical pinball game with a fantasy-and-women theme, reflecting the playful, illustrative style typical of pre-war pinball art.
Fantasy's gameplay centers on 17 mushroom bumpers: hitting all of the lit bumpers resets them so they light again, and additional hits after that award replays. Players who hit every light in the top row are rewarded with an extra ball via a rollover lane. The game cost five balls for five cents, typical of the value-per-coin pricing of the era, and operators could configure it for free-play replay awards or straight play with no award.
Little is documented about Fantasy's specific designer, but its bold artwork and layered bumper-scoring system reflect the playful, lighthearted approach common to Stoner's output in this period. As a surviving example of the company's early-1940s catalog, it offers an interesting look at early bumper-based scoring design.
