About This Machine

Black Jack, designed by Harry Mabs with artwork by George Molentin, was manufactured by Williams in November 1960. This single-player electro-mechanical game brings the card table to the pinball floor: the player's card score increases during play, and the dealer's score lights on the backglass at the end of the game. Beating the dealer's total without going over 21 awards a replay, giving the game a genuine blackjack flavor. The playfield and backglass are very similar to Williams' 1960 game '21'.

Gameplay is where Black Jack truly shines. The game features two flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, four standup targets, three kick-out holes, and a gobble hole, all contributing to an exciting and unpredictable experience. But it's not just about luck - players must manage their card score, navigating the risk of exceeding 21 while still trying to beat the dealer's total. The backbox uses both bulb scoring and score reels, with a bell and knocker providing the soundtrack.

Black Jack's cabinet is a fine example of mid-century modern style. It featured Williams' "Styling of the 60's" cabinet design, with anodized aluminum trim, tapered tubular chromium steel legs, and a shelf with cigarette holder that allowed for placement of drinks (extending the cabinet by six inches). Williams used this cabinet design on several games during 1960-1961, making Black Jack a stylish snapshot of the era.
