About This Machine

The 1965 Double Play is credited to Chicago Coin Machine Manufacturing Company as a one-player, baseball-themed electro-mechanical bat game. However, IPDB researchers note they have found no contemporary evidence -- such as trade press ads -- that Chicago Coin actually produced this game; it appears on several long-standing pinball reference lists but lacks solid documentation. It's possible Chicago Coin planned a game under this name but shelved it after Williams released its own 'Double Play' bat game in April 1965, the same month Chicago Coin instead released 'Big League.'

If the machine was produced as described, it would have used the classic EM construction of the era -- solenoids, relays, and a mechanical playfield -- typical of early sports-themed bat games, where players used a mechanical bat rather than flippers to send the ball into play.

Because of the uncertainty surrounding its origin, Double Play is best understood as a historical curiosity: an entry that persists across collector references without confirmed evidence it was ever actually manufactured.
