De Luxe Short-Stop
About This Machine
The De Luxe Short-Stop, produced by Williams Manufacturing Company in April 1958, is a two-player electromechanical (EM) baseball-themed pinball machine. The Deluxe Model 203 includes both replay and match features; a non-replay version was released as the New York model of 'Short-Stop.'
Key to this machine's gameplay are its three unpainted metal ramps, which add an element of challenge and depth to the game. The player navigates the ball through these ramps to achieve high scores while capitalizing on various scoring opportunities presented by the backglass design. Notably, the "S-H-O-R-T-S-T-O-P" spelling on the backglass is a carry-over feature from the original 1948 'Shortstop,' lighting up as play progresses.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the De Luxe Short-Stop boasts a classic, straightforward design reflective of late-1950s EM pinball, with baseball-themed artwork. Little is documented about the machine's designer, but its blend of mechanical backbox animation and carry-over scoring features makes it a notable entry in Williams' long-running series of baseball games.
