Theatre of Magic
About This Machine
The Theatre of Magic, designed by John Popadiuk and released in 1995, is a memorable and richly-mechanized machine from the Bally/Midway lineup. Popadiuk originally conceived the game around a David Copperfield license that ultimately didn't happen, and the playfield was adapted to its stage-magic theme when that fell through.
One of the key aspects that set Theatre of Magic apart is its unique gameplay. Players can enjoy several multiball modes: Tiger Saw Multiball, Trunk Multiball, and Trunk Multiball with Vanish Lock, which builds up to four balls using the rotating trunk toy on the playfield and its magnet, which levitates the ball and makes it "disappear" to start multiball. The "Spirit Ring," a round magnet, grabs the ball from the left ramp and releases it across the playfield. The machine also features a captive ball and a Newton ball post, all contributing to its distinctive play experience.
The design and art of Theatre of Magic, by artist Linda Deal, are equally impressive, boasting intricate details that transport players into a world of magic and illusion. The game's architecture cleverly incorporates moving parts and mechanisms — including hidden upper rollovers only visible via a mirror on the back panel — to create an immersive atmosphere. With its captivating theme and inventive gameplay features, Theatre of Magic remains a fondly remembered pinball machine among enthusiasts.
