About This Machine

The WWF Royal Rumble pinball machine is a standout, wrestling-licensed title from Data East Pinball, released in April 1994 as one of the first pinball machines built around the World Wrestling Federation brand. It capitalized on the era's wrestling boom, and its design changed repeatedly during development as real-world roster changes forced updates to the game's content. The finished machine features many custom voice samples recorded by WWF wrestlers, along with play-by-play style presentation.

As a widebody Data East machine, WWF Royal Rumble packs in four flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, a 4-bank and a 3-bank of drop targets, six standup targets, a captive ball, a vertical up-kicker, a horseshoe lane, and an elevated mini-playfield. A shaker motor rumbles the cabinet whenever certain targets are hit, adding physical feedback that was still a novelty for pinball at the time.

Design credit goes to Tim Seckel and Joe Kaminkow, with mechanics by Seckel, art by Paul Faris and Markus Rothkranz, and software by Neil Falconer, Orin Day, and Lyman F. Sheats Jr. With 3,500 units produced between April and June 1994, WWF Royal Rumble remains a sought-after, high-energy example of licensed sports-entertainment pinball from the mid-1990s.
