World Cup Soccer
About This Machine
World Cup Soccer, designed by John Popadiuk and Larry DeMar, is a standout title from February 1994 that embodies the excitement of the beautiful game. It followed in the footsteps of Williams' own 1978 machine of the same theme, but its release coincided with the 1994 FIFA World Cup, hosted in the United States, making it a timely tribute to the global sporting event; the flyer even featured Chicago's Soldier Field, one of the tournament's host stadiums.
The gameplay is where World Cup Soccer truly shines. Players face flippers, pop bumpers, and slingshots, along with two ramps, a spinning target, and a diverter. The signature toy is a large hemispherical soccer ball on the upper-right playfield that spins in both directions to redirect the ball. A goalie target moves side to side at the top of the playfield, and the Magna-Save system, located above the left flipper, can be activated with an extra cabinet button to save a ball in play.
Voice-over artist Tim Kitzrow provided the play-by-play announcer voice, adding to the immersive sports-broadcast feel. With 8,743 units produced, World Cup Soccer remains a well-regarded example of mid-90s Bally/Midway design and a favorite among fans of sports-themed pinball.
