War
About This Machine
The War pinball machine, manufactured by Viza Mfg., Inc. and shown at the November 1979 AMOA Expo, is an intriguing example of early solid-state electronic pinball design. It is an early head-to-head game, allowing two players to compete simultaneously from opposite ends of the playfield, adding an element of social interaction and strategic depth. Each player's flipper buttons control only the flippers facing their opponent, creating a dynamic and unpredictable experience that sets War apart from other pinball machines of its time; the game can also be played solo.
One of the most striking features of the War machine is its use of red blinking LEDs for the Viking's eyes. The game also boasts eight flippers, two pop bumpers, and two slingshots, providing players with ample opportunities for shots and combinations. Its playfield features a portion of Frank Frazetta's artwork 'The Berserker' — reportedly used without authorization, according to his wife and business manager Ellie Frazetta.
Interestingly, War's playfield underwent production changes during its run, with the most noticeable being the eventual removal of the two kick-out holes present in earlier versions. Despite its relatively unknown status today, War remains an interesting piece of pinball history, offering a window into the evolution of gameplay and design in the late 1970s.
