Wagon Train
About This Machine
Wagon Train is a rare and intriguing electro-mechanical pinball machine from D. Gottlieb & Company, designed by Wayne Neyens with artwork by Roy Parker, released in April 1960. Its backglass includes a "Score To Beat" window, allowing operators to place a card behind the backglass showing a suggested high score, visible to the player.
The gameplay features two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two slingshots, which were typical of EM machines during this era. The machine's roto-targets require players to time their shots carefully for the best scoring opportunities.
The American West theme is a classic one in pinball history, and Wagon Train's artwork depicts Ward Bond, star of the popular 1957-1965 TV series of the same name. Bond passed away in November 1960, just seven months after this game's release, and was replaced in the show's cast for its remaining run. With only 1,100 units confirmed produced, Wagon Train offers a fascinating, and fairly scarce, glimpse into the evolution of pinball design during this era.
