About This Machine

Voltan Escapes Cosmic Doom is a fantasy-themed solid-state electronic pinball machine from Bally Manufacturing Corporation, designed by George Christian with artwork by Dave Christensen, released in February 1979.

Gameplay-wise, Voltan Escapes Cosmic Doom features two flippers, three pop bumpers, and five standup targets. The inclusion of slingshots, spinning targets, and a star rollover adds variety and challenge to the experience.

The game's fantasy theme is represented through artwork featuring an otherworldly, space-age setting typical of late-1970s Bally pinball design. With only 365 units confirmed produced, Voltan is a relatively rare title. Notably, a small number of the roughly 330 originally planned units were later used by Bally engineers to field-test an early microprocessor-based sound board, the precursor to the system later used in Bally's "Squawk and Talk" speech games — at least three or four of these specially modified games are known to have existed.
