Viking
About This Machine
The Williams Viking, released in June 1960, is a notable electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine designed by veteran Williams designer Harry Mabs. It reflects Williams' Norse History theme with gameplay that combines challenge and strategy typical of the company's output at the time.
Key to the Viking's appeal is its blend of challenging gameplay and rewarding strategy. Players navigate a playfield with four stand-up targets and slingshots that require precision timing to activate. The presence of pop bumpers, passive bumpers, kick-out holes, and a gobble hole adds depth to the game, while the option for 3 or 5 ball play introduces an element of risk and reward. The game also features Williams' new "Styling of the '60s" cabinet design, with anodized aluminum trim, tapered tubular chromium steel legs, and a drink-holder shelf — a cabinet style Williams reused on several games through 1960-1961.
The Viking's Double Match feature allowed operators to adjust replay awards from 2, 5, or 10 replays, a way of balancing gameplay generosity with revenue generation. For collectors and enthusiasts, the Viking stands as a good example of early-1960s Williams design, offering a glimpse into the cabinet and gameplay conventions of the era.
