About This Machine

The Vampire, designed by Ted Zale with art by Dick White, was manufactured by Bally in January 1971 (799 units confirmed produced). It is a Myth and Legend-themed electro-mechanical (EM) pinball for two players.

Gameplay features two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, six standup targets, and three rollover buttons, among other notable components. The inclusion of two kick-out holes, a free ball gate, and an up-post between the flippers adds an extra layer of challenge to the gameplay experience. A distinctive rule has the right kick-out hole's value reset to its lowest setting at the end of each ball in play, and the replay wheel maxes out at 25. Sound is provided by two bells and a knocker.

Known variations exist among surviving units: one game with serial number 1513 has a blue cabinet instead of the standard gray and a different backbox player relay, while another with serial number 2222 has an alternate backglass whose score reel windows lack the dark green "shadowing" found along the edges of most other glasses. These variations make Vampire an interesting subject for collectors comparing different production runs.
