About This Machine

The Valencia, designed by pinball pioneer Harry Williams with art by Christian Marche, was manufactured by Williams Electronics in July 1975 in very limited numbers. It comes from the years just before Williams' EM machines gave way to solid-state electronics later in the decade. A 2-player version of this game is Williams' 1975 'Toledo'.

Gameplay features on the Valencia include four flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, eight button targets, eight rollover buttons, four standup targets, and a kick-out hole, along with an end-of-ball bonus and a replay wheel with a maximum of 37. The machine's layout is characterized by its compact size and dense target placement, requiring players to be strategic in their shots. Its sound is provided by 3 chimes and a knocker.

Because Williams made only a handful of Valencia units before abandoning the model, surviving examples show notable backglass color variations - some very red, some pale, with differences in player-up circle colors and other details - that former Williams employee Duncan Brown has suggested may reflect the company experimenting with backglass color rather than simple fading. Little else is documented about the machine's theme or artwork, but pinball enthusiasts will appreciate the Valencia as a scarce example of mid-1970s Williams EM design.
