Universe
About This Machine
The Universe pinball machine, manufactured by Zaccaria of Bologna, Italy in November 1977, is a lesser-known electro-mechanical (EM) game that holds its own place in pinball history. By the late 1970s EM technology was largely being phased out in favor of solid-state electronics, making this one of the later EM machines produced, from a company that operated from 1974 to 1987.
Gameplay on Universe is characterized by its dual flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, four drop targets, and three standup targets. Players can choose between playing with either three or five balls, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game. The machine's design incorporates a kick-out hole, which allows for more dynamic gameplay and challenging shots.
The theme of Universe is fantasy, with art by Lorenzo Rimondini. The machine's sound effects are simple and effective - just three chimes and a knocker. The maximum displayed point score is 999,900 points per player; a flyer claiming a highest score of 9,999,000 appears to be incorrect. Unfortunately, little else is documented about Universe, making it an intriguing subject for pinball historians and enthusiasts alike.
