About This Machine

Underwater, manufactured by Recel S.A. of Madrid, Spain (active 1974-1986), is an electro-mechanical pinball machine produced in June 1976, built around an adventure/combat theme. The same design was also sold domestically in Spain under the name 'Underwater' by Petaco.

The four-player machine features two flippers, a single pop bumper, three slingshots, two standup targets, a vari-target, a kick-out hole, and a spinning target. An upper-right ball-return rollunder adds an extra layer of playfield routing, and the game awards an end-of-ball bonus. Notably, Underwater uses an electronic sound module rather than the mechanical chimes or bells common on many EM machines of the period.

No specific designer is credited for Underwater, but its combat-adventure theme and blended electro-mechanical/electronic sound design make it a distinctive example of 1970s Spanish pinball manufacturing.
