About This Machine

The Tycoon, manufactured by Mills Novelty Company in January 1936, is a single-player electro-mechanical payout machine from the pre-flipper era of pinball. A follow-up, "New Tycoon," was released in October 1936, with an "Improved New Tycoon" following in November 1936.

As a payout machine, Tycoon would have rewarded successful play with coin payouts rather than free games, a common format for coin-operated machines of the mid-1930s before stricter gambling regulations pushed the industry toward replay-based scoring.

Little documentation survives about Tycoon's specific gameplay, artwork, or theme, which is typical for machines of this era. Given the scarcity of historical records, the Tycoon and its successor models remain of interest primarily to collectors and historians studying Mills Novelty's mid-1930s payout machine lineup.
