About This Machine

The 2001, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison, was manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Company in January 1971. Built around a Fantasy theme, it is historically notable as one of the first pinball machines — alongside its add-a-ball sibling 'Dimension' and export version 'Galaxie' — to feature multiple banks of drop targets, a design choice that influenced later Gottlieb games.

Gameplay features two flippers, two pop bumpers, four slingshots, two 10-bank drop target banks, five kick-out holes, and four standup targets. Two slingshot kickers sit in the upper playfield, and the maximum displayed score is 9,999 points, accompanied by three chimes for sound.

The backglass animation is a highlight: completing a bank of drop targets lights one of four "starred" cards, and lighting all three cards makes the playfield specials light alternately. Combined with its fantasy-themed art, the 2001 remains a landmark machine for its pioneering use of multiple drop-target banks.
