Turf Champ
About This Machine
The Turf Champ, produced by Williams Manufacturing Company and first shipped July 25, 1958, is a horse-racing themed electromechanical (EM) pinball machine designed by Harry Mabs and Harry Williams, with backglass art by George Molentin.
What sets Turf Champ apart is its unique gameplay: there is no point scoring at all -- the sole objective is guiding your horse to win a simulated race using the machine's two flippers and two slingshots. Six pop bumpers add to the challenge, testing players' timing and hand-eye coordination, while playfield animation brings the horse race to life. The replay wheel has a maximum of 47, and the game's sound is provided by a single bell and knocker.
The Turf Champ's cabinet features an eye-catching illustration of a horse in full gallop, consistent with Williams' horse-racing themed titles of the era. As a distinctive, non-scoring horse-racing game, Turf Champ offers an unusual and engaging entry in the history of electromechanical pinball design.
