About This Machine

The Trophy, manufactured by Bally in March 1948, is a one-ball, single-player horse-racing payout machine -- part of a popular postwar genre of wagering-oriented pinball games rather than a conventional flipper pinball. A non-payout version of the same game was released by Bally as 'Gold Cup.'

As with other games in this genre, Trophy's electro-mechanical mechanisms drive a simulated horse race across the playfield, with players and operators using the outcome for payout rather than accumulating a traditional point score.

The backglass artwork, depicting the horse-racing theme, was created by artist Lester Hilbrich (1911-1999), who worked for Advertising Posters, Sullivan-Nolan Advertising, and later for Lion Manufacturing/Bally. Detailed documentation of the game's specific mechanical features has not survived, but as a horse-racing payout title from the immediate postwar era, Trophy reflects the popularity of wagering-style pinball machines during that period.
