Tournament
About This Machine
The Tournament, manufactured by D. Gottlieb & Company in August 1955, was designed by Wayne Neyens with artwork by Roy Parker, and only 600 units were confirmed produced, making it a fairly scarce two-player title from the mid-1950s.
The Tournament boasts an array of features that set it apart from other machines of its time. Its reversed flippers were a departure from the standard design, changing how players had to approach shots and adding a new level of challenge and strategy to gameplay. Additionally, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, four standup targets, and a single gobble hole provide an engaging experience for players seeking to maximize their scores (the maximum displayed score is 999 points per player).
The medieval jousting theme is represented through the machine's artwork, featuring knights, horses, and castles typical of Gottlieb's mid-1950s output. While little else is documented about the machine beyond its technical specifications, its low production number and distinctive reversed-flipper layout make it an interesting piece of pinball history.
