Torpedo Alley
About This Machine
Torpedo Alley is a solid-state electronic pinball machine designed by Claude Fernandez and released by Data East in August 1988, with artwork by Kevin O'Connor and Margaret Hudson, sound by Kyle Johnson and David Thiel, music by David Thiel, and software by Lonnie D. Ropp and Richard Ditton. Only 1,002 units were confirmed produced during its short run, which lasted from August to November 1988.
The machine's core gameplay revolves around an underwater combat theme, with three flippers, three bumpers, and two slingshots supporting the action. Instant Multiball can launch two or three balls at once, a left outlane kickback gives players a second chance, and twin torpedo tube kickouts reinforce the naval combat feel. A General Illumination Flasher Relay adds dramatic lighting, and the double-layer backglass deepens the underwater visual.
One of Torpedo Alley's most memorable touches is its sinking-ship effect: a periscope glass on the playfield, triggered by ship targets, lets players watch a ship go down mid-game. The Buy-In feature let players insert additional coins to retain certain playfield achievements into their next game, an operator-configurable option unusual for its time. At roughly 250 pounds with legs attached, it remains a substantial, feature-dense machine from Data East's late-1980s lineup.
