Top Hat
About This Machine
The Top Hat pinball machine, manufactured by Williams in 1958, was designed by company founder Harry Williams, with artwork by George Molentin. This two-player electro-mechanical (EM) machine reflects the mature, well-established EM design conventions of the late 1950s.
At the heart of Top Hat lies engaging, challenging gameplay: five balls per player, two flippers, four pop bumpers, five passive bumpers, two slingshots, two standup targets, and a gobble hole. The double match feature adds excitement, letting the operator award up to 10 replays at their discretion.
One notable aspect of Top Hat's design is its use of wood rails with a distinctive cigarette holder on the left rail – a touch that speaks to the era's design sensibilities. With a maximum displayed score of 1,999 points per player, Top Hat demands skill and strategy from players. It stands as a solid example of late-1950s Williams craftsmanship, offering a glimpse into the pinball design of that period.
